When you hear the word Anaconda, you immediately think of an enormous snake, but it might surprise you that a town called Anaconda is host to one of the most unique golf courses in the U.S.

A few years ago my parents retired to Anaconda, Montana, just a short drive from Butte. Soon after moving there, my father discovered a golf course called Old Works Golf Club. Old Works is a Jack Nicklaus designed course owned and operated by Troon Golf.

I’ve been lucky enough to play Old Works GC a couple of times, and I’m still in awe of its scenery and unique layout. The standout feature of Old Works is its black sand traps. Anaconda has some of the most mineral rich soil in the world, and has been the site of mining operations for years. A by-product of the mining and refining process is a black sand called Slag, which creates an unusual contrast to the bright green fairways and rough.

Topping out at over 7,700 yards, Old Works is a long course, but Anaconda’s 5,300-foot elevation helps to shorten it. With numerous elevated tee boxes, generous fairways and thin air, you really get the feeling you can bomb it.

The course is built within an old mining site with much of the mining structures still in place. It’s like going back in time, but instead of riding underground in a mining cart, you’re playing golf. It’s a very unique and fun experience.

The greens are quite large and have numerous undulations. The combination of long yardage and tricky greens make Old Works a challenging course. However, it does provide numerous tee marker options to cater to many skill levels.

If you ever find yourself in Montana – and it’s not snowing – you owe it to yourself to play Old Works Golf Club.
